Trump announced that he would impose high tariffs on 14 countries starting from August 1

2025-07-08 11:30:52

U.S. President Trump revealed on Monday that imports from at least 14 countries will face high tariffs starting August 1.

In a series of social media posts, the president shared screenshots of a form letter specifying the new tariff rates sent to the leaders of Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, South Africa, Laos and Myanmar.

Later that day, he shared seven more letters, addressed to the leaders of Bosnia, Tunisia, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Serbia, Cambodia and Thailand.

Goods imported into the United States from Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Kazakhstan and Tunisia will now face a 25 percent tariff, according to the letter released by Trump.

Goods from South Africa and Bosnia will be subject to a 30 percent U.S. tariff, and imports from Indonesia will be subject to a 32 percent excise tax.

The president said in his letter that the tariff rates for Bangladesh and Serbia are both 35 percent, while the rates for Cambodia and Thailand are 36 percent.

Imports from Laos and Myanmar will face tariffs of 40 percent, according to the letter Trump posted on Truth Social.

The letter signed by Trump also said the United States "may" consider adjusting the new tariff levels "depending on our relationship with your country."

The letters are the first to be sent before Wednesday, when his so-called reciprocal tariffs on dozens of countries are scheduled to return to the higher levels he announced in early April.

White House press secretary Levitt said more letters would be sent in the coming days.

Late Monday afternoon, Trump signed an executive order delaying Wednesday’s tariff deadline until Aug. 1. The order said Trump made the decision “based on additional information and the advice of multiple senior officials.”

For most countries, the new U.S. tariff rates are fairly close to the tariff levels they faced after Trump announced the "Liberation Day" tariffs on April 2.
