CFTC Positions Report: Investors increase net long gold positions and cut net long crude oil positions

Data from the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) showed that speculative net long positions in COMEX gold futures increased by 8,815 contracts to 143,656 contracts in the week ending July 15.

As of the week ending July 15, the speculative net long position in WTI crude oil futures decreased by 47,748 lots to 37,998 lots, while the net long position in natural gas futures in the NYMEX and ICE markets increased by 29,217 lots to 265,390 lots.

As of the week ending July 15, the speculative net long position in COMEX silver futures increased by 322 lots to 43,927 lots, and the speculative net short position in COMEX copper futures increased by 988 lots to 37,275 lots.

As of the week ending July 15, the CFTC's net long position in the yen was 103,582 contracts, and the net long position in the euro was 128,221 contracts; the net long position in the pound was 29,191 contracts; and the net short position in the Swiss franc was -22,637 contracts.

Equity fund managers reduced their net long position in S&P 500 futures contracts by 2,265 to 862,416 in the week ended July 15, while equity fund speculators cut their net short position by 8,741 to 329,471.

As of the week ending July 15, speculators increased their net short positions in CBOT U.S. 2-year Treasury futures by 33,727 contracts to 1,299,860 contracts, reduced their net short positions in U.S. 5-year Treasury futures by 11,259 contracts to 2,505,528 contracts, reduced their net short positions in U.S. 10-year Treasury futures by 68,202 contracts to 772,377 contracts, and increased their net short positions in ultra-long Treasury futures by 5,794 contracts to 228,618 contracts.

As of the week ending July 15, CBOT wheat speculators' net short positions increased by 3,994 lots to 78,399 lots, CBOT corn speculators' net short positions decreased by 19,991 lots to 264,201 lots, and CBOT soybean speculators' net short positions increased by 26,091 lots to 89,226 lots.

As of the week ending July 15, ICE cotton speculators' net short positions decreased by 6,260 lots to 50,628 lots, ICE cocoa speculators' net long positions decreased by 169 lots to 2,808 lots, ICE sugar speculators' net short positions decreased by 9,575 lots to 110,247 lots, and ICE coffee speculators' net long positions increased by 699 lots to 16,407 lots.
