Definition
This is a weekly cotton growth status indicator released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). This data represents the USDA's Crop Progress Report—which includes data from different stages of the U.S. crop growing season. Due to the seasonality of crop growth, different data fields are reported for their respective crops only at a specific time of year. Farmland includes, but is not limited to, planting, emergence, harvest, and conditions. Data is released every Monday at 4:00 PM ET (postponed if it falls on a holiday).
Impact on Market
Why It Matters
The United States is the third-largest cotton producer. Better cotton growing conditions in the US suggest potentially higher production and supply, which theoretically is bearish for cotton prices. 1QH notes: According to parameters from authoritative international media, this indicator has a correlation of 61%.
