Definition
Palm oil is a tropical woody plant oil and is currently the world's largest producer, consumer, and internationally traded vegetable oil. Along with soybean oil and rapeseed oil, it is known as one of the "world's three major vegetable oils," with a history of consumption spanning over five thousand years. Palm oil is extracted from the fruit of the oil palm tree. The pulp and kernel produce palm oil and palm kernel oil, respectively; traditionally, the term "palm oil" only refers to the former. After refining and fractionation, palm oil yields products with different melting points, which have wide applications in the catering, food, and oleochemical industries. Southeast Asia and Africa are the main palm oil producing regions, accounting for approximately 88% of the world's total production. Indonesia, Malaysia, and Nigeria are the world's top three producers. Currently, China is the world's largest importer of palm oil, consuming approximately 6 million tons annually, accounting for 20% of the total market. (Data from April 2021)
Impact on Market
