Definition
The current account is a major item on a country's balance of payments, recording the inflow and outflow of funds between a country and foreign countries, including due to factors such as imports and exports of goods and services, investment income, other income from goods and services, and unilateral transfers.
Impact on Market
If there is a deficit, an announced figure greater than the forecast figure is bearish for the yen; if there is a surplus, an announced figure greater than the forecast figure is bullish for the yen.
Why It Matters
A current account surplus indicates an increase in a country's net foreign wealth or net foreign investment. A negative current account deficit indicates a decrease in both net foreign wealth and investment. A widening current account deficit will lead to a depreciation of a country's currency.
