Definition
PCE corresponds to "Personal Consumption Expenditures" in Chinese. The core PCE price index is a key indicator for measuring inflation in U.S. private consumption. It was first introduced by the Bureau of Economic Analysis of the U.S. Department of Commerce and adopted by the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), the policy-making body of the Federal Reserve, as a major indicator for measuring inflation in 2002.
Impact on Market
Released value > Forecast value = Positive for the US dollar
Why It Matters
In January 2012, the Federal Reserve set a 2% annual increase in the core PCE rate as its long-term inflation target, thus announcing that the Fed also had a clear inflation target. If the core PCE rate rises above 2%, the Fed will tighten monetary policy, which is beneficial to the US dollar and bullish for gold, silver, oil, and copper; conversely, it is bearish for gold, silver, oil, and copper.
