Definition
PCE corresponds to the Chinese term "Personal Consumption Expenditure"; the core PCE price index is a key indicator for measuring inflation in private consumption in the United States. It was first introduced by the Bureau of Economic Analysis of the US Department of Commerce and was adopted as a major indicator for measuring inflation by the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), the decision - making body of the Federal Reserve, in 2002.
Impact on Market
Announced value > Forecast value = Bullish for the US dollar
Why It Matters
In January 2012, the Federal Reserve set the annual increase rate of core PCE at 2% as its long - term inflation target, thereby announcing that the Fed also had a clear inflation target. If the annual increase rate of core PCE exceeds 2%, the Federal Reserve will tighten its monetary policy, which is beneficial to the US dollar, and has positive or negative impacts on gold, silver, oil, and copper; conversely, it is negative for gold, silver, oil, and copper.
