[Vietnam urges US to reconsider seafood ban] Vietnam urged the United States to reconsider a ruling that essentially bans the import of some seafood, warning that the move could undermine bilateral trade and cause the Southeast Asian country's seafood industry to lose $500 million a year. According to an announcement on the government website, Vietnamese Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Diem wrote to U.S. Secretary of Commerce Lutnick saying that the livelihoods of thousands of fishermen and workers are at risk. Nguyen Hong Diem pointed out that the ban will also affect American importers and consumers. In August, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) determined that 12 Vietnamese fishing companies failed to comply with the requirements of the Marine Mammal Protection Act. This means that from January 1 next year, these companies will no longer be able to export seafood to the United States. The Vietnam Seafood Exporters and Producers Association said the move could cause $500 million in losses to the seafood industry and will seriously affect exporters of products such as tuna, swordfish, grouper, mackerel and crab.
