UK Food Inflation Slightly Decreases to 4.9%, Remaining Under Pressure for Consumers ⑴ A new report from Worldpanel, a subsidiary of market research firm Numerator, shows that in the four weeks ending September 7, the UK's annualized grocery inflation rate fell slightly to 4.9% from 5.0% the previous month, but remains elevated, providing only limited relief for shoppers. ⑵ By category, chocolate, fresh meat, and butter prices saw the fastest price increases, while household paper products, confectionery, and dog food saw the fastest price declines. ⑶ Private label premium lines continued to be popular with budget shoppers, with sales increasing by 10.3% year-on-year, marking the sixth consecutive month of double-digit growth. After years of inflationary pressure, consumers are increasingly choosing private label premium products that offer similar quality to big-name brands at more affordable prices. ⑷ The best-performing retailer during the period was Tesco, with sales increasing by 7.7%, the fastest growth since December 2023, and its market share rising to 28.4%. ⑸ The fastest-growing channel was online retailer Ocado, with sales increasing by 11.9% year-on-year and a market share of 1.9%.
