France's bumper summer grain harvest is in sight, but corn production faces pressure. (1) The French Ministry of Agriculture's latest forecast indicates that this year's soft wheat production is expected to reach 33.3 million tons, up from the 33.1 million tons forecast last month and a significant 29.8% rebound from last year's rain-damaged harvest. (2) However, hot and dry weather has negatively impacted corn production. The Ministry of Agriculture has lowered its forecast for cereal corn production from 13.9 million tons last month to 13.6 million tons, a 7.8% year-on-year decrease. The decline is expected to be primarily due to lower yields, despite planted area remaining roughly the same as last year. (3) For rapeseed, the production forecast has been raised to 4.6 million tons, up from the 4.5 million tons forecast last month and a 19.3% year-on-year increase, indicating favorable harvest prospects. (4) Sugar beet production is expected to reach 31.8 million tons, a 2.3% decrease from last year, primarily due to a reduction in planted area. ⑸ It is worth noting that the production forecast for sunflower seeds has been lowered to 1.5 million tons, a decrease compared with last year. This is similar to the situation for corn, both of which are affected by the suppression of yields due to high temperatures and drought in summer.
