Coffee futures near record highs as speculators bet on reduced Brazilian crop supplies. Coffee futures are hovering near all-time highs as market speculators bet that tariffs and drought will reduce supplies from top producer Brazil. The most active Arabica coffee contract hit $4.24 per pound in New York on Tuesday, just shy of the all-time high of $4.2995 reached in February. Futures prices have risen approximately 50% since early August, driven by concerns that Brazilian supply will be insufficient to fully replenish shrinking inventories. Trader I & M Smith Ltd. reported that speculative buying, amidst sluggish trading volume, pushed prices above the $4 mark. The upward momentum triggered further buying, "creating room for further gains due to a lack of selling."
