The U.S. government is in talks with investment firm Orion Resource Partners to set up a multi-billion dollar fund for overseas mining projects. According to people familiar with the matter, the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) and New York-based Orion will each invest $600 million or more in the new fund, and potential other sovereign investors and U.S. government agencies may also participate. The fund will invest in mining projects of key minerals such as copper and rare earths that are vital to national defense and high-tech manufacturing.
