[The U.S. House of Representatives advances a temporary appropriations bill in hopes of avoiding a government shutdown] The Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday cleared the way for a vote later this week on a temporary appropriations bill aimed at avoiding a partial shutdown of the federal government within two weeks. Lawmakers voted 216 to 210 to pass a measure allowing the House to debate a temporary bill that would fund federal agencies until November 21, giving the House and Senate more time to reach an agreement on a comprehensive appropriations bill for fiscal year 2026, which begins on October 1. Republicans hope to pass the temporary appropriations bill by Friday and submit it to the Senate for deliberation. The bill still needs to be passed by the Senate and signed by President Trump before it can become law. The Republicans control the Senate with a 53-47 advantage. The temporary bill, known as the "Continuing Appropriations Resolution" (CR), needs 60 votes to pass the Senate, while Democrats oppose the bill and are brewing alternatives.
