On September 19, local time, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Syrian immigrants in the United States on the grounds that continuing to maintain the humanitarian program was "not in the interests of the United States." DHS spokesman McLaughlin emphasized that TPS is a temporary status and cannot be used as a long-term way to stay in the United States. The decision affects approximately 4,000 Syrians holding TPS, whose status will expire in 60 days. If they do not have other legal status, they may face arrest or deportation. The U.S. government also recommends that they "voluntarily leave the country."
