[Signals of Divergence in Canada's Job Market: A Surge in Full-Time Jobs Can't Mask the Shadow of Unemployment] ⑴ Canada's unemployment rate remained at 7.1% in September, slightly below the market expectation of 7.2%, but still at a four-year high since August 2021. ⑵ Employment increased by 60,400, significantly exceeding the market expectation of an increase of 5,000 and partially offsetting the cumulative decline of 106,000 in the previous two months. ⑶ Full-time employment surged by 106,100, a significant increase, but part-time jobs decreased by 45,600, forming a sharp contrast. ⑷ The total number of unemployed people climbed to 1.61 million, an increase of 11,900 from the previous month and a year-on-year increase of 0.7%. ⑸ Employment in manufacturing increased by 28,000, in health care and social assistance by 14,000, and in the agricultural sector surged by 6.1%. ⑹ Employment in wholesale and retail trade decreased by 21,000, indicating a possible weakening of consumer demand. ⑺ Alberta led the nation with an increase of 43,000 jobs, while Newfoundland and Labrador saw a decrease of 2,200 jobs.
