Venezuelan President Maduro expressed support for Colombia on October 20th, local time. He said Venezuela and Colombia are "two nations, one," and, as a Colombian military officer who had written to him had said, they are "Siamese twins." Any US action against one would be an offense against the other. Following the escalation of relations with Venezuela, relations between the US and Colombia have also recently become strained. On October 17th, the US military attacked a Colombian boat on the high seas, killing three people, citing "combating drug trafficking." On October 19th, US President Trump called Petro a "drug kingpin," announced a halt to aid to Colombia, and threatened to impose tariffs. Petro responded to Trump on social media, stating that Colombia has never been disrespectful to the US and advising Trump to understand the facts before making such irresponsible remarks. The Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly protested Trump's personal attack on Petro, stating that the US statement was a direct threat to Colombia's sovereignty and violated all international law and diplomatic norms.
