[ECHR Ruling: Norway's Arctic Oil Drilling Complies with Human Rights Convention] ⑴ The European Court of Human Rights unanimously ruled in favor of the Norwegian government on Tuesday, dismissing a climate lawsuit filed by young activists alleging that Arctic oil exploration jeopardized their future human rights. ⑵ The plaintiffs alleged that Norway's 2016 decision to grant 10 exploration licenses in the Barents Sea failed to adequately assess environmental impacts, but the court determined that the process did not infringe on the right to private and family life. ⑶ As Western Europe's largest oil and gas producer, Norway produces 4 million barrels of oil equivalent per day and has stated its commitment to continue oil and gas production for decades while supporting global emissions reductions. ⑷ The plaintiffs in this case, including six young people in their 20s and organizations such as Greenpeace, had previously lost their cases in three Norwegian courts, and the ECJ ultimately upheld the original ruling.
