[Banks' Fees from Green Bonds Surpass Oil Majors for the First Time] So far this year, banks have generated nearly $3.5 billion in revenue from climate-related financing. For the fourth consecutive year, the money banks have earned from lending for green-related projects and underwriting bond sales has exceeded their earnings from fossil fuel companies. Data shows that as of last Friday, banks had generated a total of nearly $3.5 billion in revenue from climate-related financing this year, compared to approximately $2.6 billion from working with oil, gas, and coal companies. This is a dramatic change from just prior years in 2020, when banks earned nearly twice as much in fees from oil majors (and gas and coal companies) as they did from supporting green initiatives.
