[German Machinery Severely Hit, 56% of US Exports Face Catastrophic Tariffs] ⑴ The German Engineering Federation (DEF) warns that if the US expands its tariff list in December, 56% of German and European machinery exports will be impacted. ⑵ This percentage has risen significantly from 40% in August, covering almost all branches of mechanical engineering. ⑶ The DEF, representing 3,600 mechanical engineering companies, has conveyed its concerns to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. ⑷ The US Department of Commerce initiated procedures in October to include more products in its steel and aluminum tariff list, with a deadline of early December. ⑸ If the recommendations are adopted, steel and aluminum materials for approximately 200 types of engineering products will face a 50% import tariff. ⑹ Misrepresenting the value or origin of materials could result in punitive tariffs of up to 200%. ⑺ Tariffs bring complex bureaucratic requirements that could disrupt supply chains and ultimately affect US consumers. ⑻ European machinery is widely used in key sectors such as US aerospace, weapons systems, and semiconductor manufacturing.
