[Australian Stocks Closed Flat on Friday, Posting Biggest Weekly Loss in Six Months] ⑴ Australia's S&P/ASX 200 index closed at 8882 points on Friday, essentially flat, erasing all gains from the morning session. ⑵ Declines in the consumer discretionary sector dragged down the market, offsetting gains in gold miners and major banks. ⑶ The index fell 1.5% this week, its biggest weekly drop since the end of March. ⑷ October saw a slight gain of 0.4%, influenced by strong inflation data that dampened expectations of interest rate cuts. ⑸ The consumer discretionary sector fell 1.7% to a three-month low, with retail giant Wesfarmers down 2.5%. ⑹ Electronics retailer JB Hi-Fi fell 3.4% due to weak sales growth. ⑺ Gold stocks surged 3.3%, driven by expectations of record gold prices, but were essentially flat for the month. ⑻ Financial stocks edged higher, with Westpac and Commonwealth Bank rising 0.7% and 1% respectively. (9) ANZ Bank fell 0.6% as its second-half profits were impacted by more than A$1 billion.
