[French Inflation Slows More Than Expected in October] ⑴ French October consumer price index (CPI) rose slightly less than expected, as energy costs continued to decline and food price increases slowed. ⑵ The EU harmonized inflation rate rose 0.9% year-on-year, lower than September's 1.1% and market expectations of 1%. ⑶ Accelerated declines in energy prices were the main drag, with both natural gas and oil product costs falling. ⑷ Food inflation slowed, service prices maintained the same increase as in September, and the decline in manufactured goods prices widened slightly. ⑸ The October CPI rose slightly by 0.1% month-on-month, mainly driven by price increases in transportation services and other sectors. ⑹ Measured by the French domestic CPI, the October inflation rate was 1.0%, lower than September's 1.2%. ⑺ French inflation has been below the European Central Bank's (ECB) 2% medium-term target for more than a year. ⑻ ECB policymakers are preparing for their December meeting, assessing the risks of inflation falling below the target. ⑼ The central bank kept interest rates unchanged at its meeting on Thursday.
