[US Energy Secretary: US and Canada Aim to Return to Trade Negotiations] US Energy Secretary Jerry Wright stated that the US and Canada aim to return to the negotiating table and strengthen cooperation in oil, gas, and key minerals. Speaking at the G7 Energy and Environment Ministers' Meeting in Toronto, Wright said that negotiations between the US and Canada had stalled "for some important reasons." Last week, US President Trump halted negotiations after Ontario aired an anti-tariff advertisement in the US that referenced a 1987 radio address by former President Reagan. Trump also threatened to impose an additional 10% tariff on Canadian goods. Before the negotiations broke down, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that progress had been made on steel and aluminum tariffs and an energy agreement. Carney also proposed to Trump the restart of the Keystone XL pipeline project. Wright said, "We've encountered some bumps along the way. I think the goal is to get both sides back together and see cooperation between the US and Canada in key minerals, oil, and gas."
