On October 31 local time, a U.S. federal judge ruled that the Trump administration could not suspend the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (commonly known as "food stamps") during the government shutdown, arguing that this move might violate federal law because the program ran out of funds on October 31 during the government shutdown. The program covers approximately 42 million people across the United States, about one-eighth of the total population, and most of them have incomes below the poverty line. Recipients can use federal food relief funds to purchase food at designated stores and other places.
