As the U.S. government shutdown approaches its second month, the Department of Labor is recalling 255 employees previously furloughed to bolster service positions. The Department of Labor's latest contingency plan, released Friday, indicates that employees of the Office of Foreign Labor Certification will be recalled to handle general wage determinations and labor certification applications. The Office of Foreign Labor Certification, under the Employment and Training Administration, will need to allocate an additional 200 employees to perform "legally essential work"—these employees are considered core personnel. In addition, the Division of Paychecks and Hours will add 55 employees, whose compensation will be funded independently of annual appropriations.
