[Tanzania's First Elected Female President Sparks Concern Over Protests] 1. Tanzania's National Electoral Commission announced the presidential election results on November 1st. Samia Suluhu Hassan, the incumbent president and candidate of the ruling Revolutionary Party, won with 97.66% of the vote, becoming the country's first democratically elected female president. The election was held on October 29th; however, since the vote, demonstrations have erupted in several cities, with people taking to the streets to call for electoral reform. In response to the tensions, the government imposed a curfew in Dar es Salaam from 6 PM on October 29th, which remained in effect as of November 1st. 2. On the same day, the African Commission on Human Rights and Ethnic Rights issued a statement expressing serious concern about the deteriorating human rights situation in Tanzania following the election. The Commission called on the government to actively de-escalate the current situation, avoid using excessive force against protesters, and immediately launch an independent investigation. The Commission emphasized that it will continue to monitor human rights developments in Tanzania.
