On October 31, Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao met with New Zealand Trade Minister John McClay in Gyeongju, South Korea. The two sides exchanged views on China-New Zealand economic and trade relations, regional economic and trade cooperation, and the multilateral trading system. Wang Wentao stated that the Chinese and New Zealand economies are highly complementary and their interests are deeply intertwined. Under the strategic guidance of the leaders of both countries, both sides should work together to expand economic and trade cooperation, explore more areas of convergence, and deepen pragmatic cooperation in various fields. They should also jointly promote the early conclusion of negotiations on the negative list for trade in services under the free trade agreement to create better conditions for the development of bilateral trade in services. China has always firmly supported and upheld the multilateral trading system with the WTO at its core. Under the current international economic and trade situation, China and New Zealand should strengthen communication and cooperation within the framework of the WTO, APEC, and relevant regional trade arrangements, jointly oppose trade protectionism, promote the smooth operation of global trade within the WTO framework, and add more stability and certainty to the world economy.
