According to reports from the Washington Post and Indian media outlets such as Livemint on November 1, US Vice President Vance stated on October 29 at an event commemorating the assassinated conservative activist Charlie Kirk that he hoped his Indian-American wife, Usha, would convert to Christianity. This statement has sparked strong anger within the Indian-American community, who criticized the statement as "hypocritical and anti-Hindu." The Indian-American community believes Vance did not respect his wife's religion and values, implying that Hinduism is inferior. The Daily Beast reported that some observers accused Vance of sacrificing his wife's interests for his personal career to cater to the Christian conservatives of the "Make America Great Again" movement. The Times of India, a major English-language newspaper in India, also stated that Vance "gives the impression of being anti-Hindu." In response to the controversy, Vance issued a statement on October 31 defending himself, saying that he was simply being honest when people were curious about his faith and family life, and insisted that he had no intention of changing Usha's faith: "She is not a Christian, and she has no intention of changing her faith."
