Firefighters brought the blaze under control that afternoon, but the main structure of the abbey was tragically destroyed. The abbey, named Lemontillo, is located in a remote area nestled in the dense forests of the Ardenne department. The mayor of the village of Tagny-Lemontillo, Freppon, stated that passersby saw smoke rising from the abbey on the morning of the 2nd and immediately called the police.
