[Kyiv May Lose IMF Support if EU Fails to Reach Agreement on Russian Assets] According to Politico, citing European officials, the EU fears Ukraine risks losing support from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) if it fails to reach an agreement on a European Commission proposal to provide loans to Ukraine based on frozen Russian assets. The previous day, Corriere della Sera reported that Italy, France, and Belgium opposed the proposal to provide loans to Ukraine based on frozen Russian assets. The newspaper noted, "Belgium's refusal to support billions of euros in EU loans to Ukraine could lead to the IMF halting financial assistance to Kyiv." Several European diplomats and a European Commission representative told the newspaper that reaching an agreement on Russian assets appears to help the IMF believe Ukraine has the financial capacity to operate in the coming years. According to Politico, "Given the significant reduction in US support for Ukraine, the IMF expects the EU to bear most of Ukraine's financial needs in the coming years."
