The EU's population has now peaked and is expected to gradually decline. According to a recent report by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre, the EU's total population will continue to decrease, while life expectancy will continue to rise. Currently, the EU's total population is 450.6 million; based on projected trends, this number will decrease to approximately 445 million by 2050, and further decline to 398.8 million by 2100, representing an overall decrease of approximately 11.7%, returning the population size to levels seen in the 1970s. The report also notes that the average life expectancy in Europe has reached a record high: the average life expectancy for newborns in 2024 has reached 81.5 years. It is projected that by 2050, one in three EU residents will be over 65 years old, compared to only one-fifth currently. By 2100, the average life expectancy for EU women is expected to exceed 90 years, and for men, it is expected to exceed 86 years; babies born in the EU in 2023 are expected to remain healthy and free from major diseases in their early 75s.
