[Global natural gas production fell in May]

2025-07-21 22:44:39

Global natural gas production fell in May compared to April, driven by lower output in Russia, the United States and Norway, according to the latest data from the Joint Organizations Data Initiative (JODI).

The latest edition of the Oil and Gas Data Monthly shows that natural gas production in the 58 countries that last updated self-reported data fell by 4.8 billion cubic meters in May compared with April.

The monthly decline was driven mainly by a 3.2 billion cubic meter drop in Russian production, a 1.6 billion cubic meter drop in the United States and a 1.3 billion cubic meter drop in Norway, which has now replaced Russia as Europe's largest gas supplier.

Compared with May 2024, global natural gas production increased slightly by 0.7 billion cubic meters, mainly due to production growth in China, Qatar and Nigeria, and a slight increase in annual production in the United States.

Meanwhile, in May, JODI reported that the country's gas demand fell by 1.2 billion cubic meters month-on-month and 2.7 billion cubic meters year-on-year.

Major gas-consuming power generating countries saw monthly declines after the end of winter amid mild spring temperatures. Demand fell in the United States, South Korea, Japan, Türkiye and the United Kingdom.

Natural gas demand in the EU and UK fell by 2.1 billion cubic meters month-on-month, but rose by 2.8 billion cubic meters year-on-year.

Total global natural gas inventories rose by 9.9 bcm in May from the previous month. However, these inventories fell by 27.6 bcm year-on-year. Inventories in the EU and UK rose by 7.2 bcm from the previous month in May, but fell by 25.1 bcm year-on-year.

The annual decline in inventories suggests countries will now have to buy more gas to fill stockpiles before the next winter.

The European Union has eased rules and targets for gas storage refills, a move aimed at preventing a price spike. However, a peak summer heatwave in northeast Asia is prompting a surge in demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG), forcing a slowdown in gas flows to Europe.
