[The UK retail winter has lasted for 10 months, and consumer confidence has fallen to the freezing point? ] ⑴ The latest survey by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) shows that the downward trend of UK retail sales has continued to the 10th month. ⑵ Although the year-on-year sales index in July rose from -46 in June to -34, it is still in the weak range, indicating that consumer demand is still sluggish. ⑶ In the survey, the expected sales index in August also rose from -49 to -31, showing that companies' confidence in the future has improved slightly. ⑷ Chief Economist Martin Sartorius pointed out that high price pressures and economic uncertainty continue to suppress household demand, resulting in a continuous decline in sales since October last year. ⑸ Although official data showed that sales rebounded in June, sales increased by only 0.2% in the three months ending June, the weakest increase since February. ⑹ The inflation rate rose to 3.6% in June, once again exacerbating the cost of living pressure on households. ⑺ It is worth noting that online sales have increased slightly for the third consecutive month, which may reflect a shift in consumption patterns.
