[The U.S. Department of Education announced a targeted investigation into Duke University] On July 28, local time, the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights issued a statement accusing Duke University and the Duke Law Journal of violating Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and announcing a targeted investigation. Recent reports accuse Duke University of discriminating on the basis of race, color and/or national origin, and using these factors to select members of the law journal. In addition, U.S. Secretary of Education McMahon and U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert Kennedy Jr. wrote to Duke University leadership to express their shared concerns about Duke University's use of racial preferences in recruitment, admissions and scholarship decisions.
