Expert: EU Will Become Increasingly Reliant on US LNG Imports. Finam analyst Sergey Kaufman stated that EU countries' dependence on US LNG is high and will continue to grow, as the US is currently experiencing a growth cycle in LNG production, and the EU is a potential major market. He added that the US accounted for over 50% of the EU's total LNG imports in the first quarter of this year, and this proportion is expected to rise in the coming years. According to the European Commission's Gas Market Report, the EU's total LNG imports will reach 31 billion cubic meters in the first quarter of 2025, an increase of 18% (5 billion cubic meters) from the previous quarter and 11% (3 billion cubic meters) from the same period last year. The report noted that the US remained the EU's largest LNG supplier in the first quarter, accounting for 53% (16.6 billion cubic meters) of its imports from the EU, up 10 percentage points (43%) from the fourth quarter of 2024 and 4 percentage points (49%) from the same period last year. Meanwhile, Russia remains the main supplier of LNG to the EU, with a 17% share in the first quarter, Kaufman said. "However, given the significant supply growth from the United States and Qatar, and the current softness in demand in the Asia-Pacific market, we believe EU countries could easily move away from Russian LNG this year," Kaufman said.
