UN Agencies Warn of Risk of Full-Scale Famine in Gaza Strip: The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP), and UNICEF issued a joint statement on the 29th, warning that the Gaza Strip faces the risk of full-scale famine as key food and nutrition indicators continue to deteriorate. The statement noted that ongoing conflict, the collapse of basic services, and restrictions on the delivery of UN aid have plunged hundreds of thousands of people in the Gaza Strip into a catastrophic food crisis. Acute malnutrition rates among children under five in urban Gaza increased fourfold in two months to 16.5%. FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu stated that the famine in the Gaza Strip is not due to a lack of food, but rather to impeded access, the collapse of local agricultural systems, and the complete loss of family livelihoods. He called for the immediate establishment of safe and sustainable humanitarian corridors and the restoration of local food production.
