[Major Transformations in the Wind Power Supply Chain: How Nippon Steel Corporation (NSM) is Leveraging the Global Energy Landscape?] ⑴ Nippon Steel Corporation (NSM) announced on July 30, 2025 (Beijing time) that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Danish wind turbine giant Vestas Wind Systems to supply steel for wind turbine towers for the European, Asian, and Japanese markets. ⑵ This agreement is part of a broader strategic initiative by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) to strengthen the country's wind power supply chain, aiming to reduce import costs and dependence on fossil fuels through renewable energy. ⑶ While offshore wind power is central to Japan's renewable energy strategy, the country currently relies heavily on imported wind turbines and related components. ⑷ Vestas has secured several major contracts in Japan, including the construction of a 375-megawatt offshore wind farm in Akita Prefecture. ⑸ Previously, METI also launched cooperation frameworks with Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy and GE Vernova of the United States to promote public-private partnerships in wind power, hydrogen, and ammonia. ⑹ Japan has set a goal of achieving 45 GW of offshore wind power capacity by 2040 to reduce its reliance on imported coal and natural gas for power generation. ⑺ However, despite three major auctions, Japan's wind power development plans continue to face challenges due to soaring costs and project delays.
