[International Energy Agency: Global Electricity Demand to Remain Strong] The International Energy Agency (IEA) released its "2025 Mid-Year Update" on July 30th, predicting that despite economic pressures, global electricity demand will continue to grow strongly through 2026, with renewable energy, natural gas, and nuclear power jointly meeting the increased demand. The report forecasts that global electricity demand will grow by 3.3% in 2025 and 3.7% in 2026. While this represents a slowdown from the 4.4% growth in 2024, it remains significantly higher than the average growth rate of 2.6% between 2015 and 2023. This continued growth is driven by growing demand for electricity to power factories and appliances, cool buildings, operate data centers, and charge electric vehicles. The report predicts that renewable energy will surpass coal as the world's largest electricity source as early as 2025 and no later than 2026, a transition that will be influenced by weather conditions and fuel price trends. Global nuclear power generation is expected to reach a record high, driven by the restart of nuclear reactors in Japan, strong nuclear power growth in the United States and France, and new nuclear power projects in Asia. Natural gas-fired power generation will also continue to grow, gradually replacing the role of coal and oil in the power sector in many regions.
