On August 1, the operator of London Heathrow Airport announced a £49 billion (approximately $64.7 billion) expansion plan, including the construction of a long-discussed third runway, which is expected to be operational by 2035 at the latest. Heathrow Airport stated that the expansion will be funded entirely by private funds. Of this, £21 billion ($27.7 billion) will be used to build the third runway, £12 billion ($15.8 billion) will be used to build a new terminal, and the remainder will be used for modernization. After the expansion, the airport will add at least 30 new daily routes, providing more domestic transfer options, and nearly double annual passenger throughput from the current 84 million to a maximum of 150 million. Heathrow Airport submitted the plan to the British government on July 31. Arora Group, which owns much of the land and hotels surrounding Heathrow Airport, also plans to bid. (CCTV News)
