European Stocks Open August with a Fall as Trump's Tariffs Impact the Market: ⑴ The European STOXX 50 Index fell 1.1%, and the STOXX 600 Index fell 0.8%. Trump announced tariff increases on India (25%), Canada (35%), and Switzerland (39%), raising the average US tariff rate from 2% to 15% in 2024. ⑵ Pharmaceutical stocks fell across the board: Novo Nordisk fell 4.4%, and AstraZeneca fell 3.6%. AXA Insurance plummeted 6% due to a decline in net profit, while Daimler Truck fell nearly 6% after lowering its earnings outlook. International Airlines Group bucked the trend and rose 1.8% after better-than-expected earnings.
