Trump Deploys Nuclear Submarines in Response to Russian Remarks: On August 1st, US President Trump posted on social media that he had ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines to the "appropriate area" in response to threatening remarks by Russian Deputy Security Council Chairman Dmitry Medvedev. Russia has yet to respond. On July 14th, Trump threatened that if Russia did not reach a peace agreement with Ukraine to end the conflict within 50 days, the United States would impose very severe tariffs and corresponding secondary tariffs on Russia. On July 28th, he said he was considering shortening the 50-day deadline to 10 to 12 days, and then on July 29th, he said the deadline would be shortened to 10 days. On July 31st, US Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations John Kelly confirmed at a Security Council meeting that Trump's deadline for completing peace talks with Ukraine was August 8th. On July 28th, Medvedev accused Trump of playing an "ultimatum game" and reminded him that Russia still possesses the ultimate nuclear strike capability of the Soviet era.
