[A deadly heatwave has hit France, with drowning deaths soaring 45%. Are summer resorts becoming "death traps"?] ⑴ According to a report from the French Public Health Agency, drowning incidents and deaths in France increased significantly between June and July of this year. ⑵ Specifically, 702 drownings were reported in France between June 1st and July 23rd. ⑶ This represents a 50% increase compared to the same period last year, resulting in 193 deaths, a year-on-year increase of 45%. ⑷ The report noted that 86 people drowned during the heatwave from June 19th to July 6th alone. ⑸ This compares to only 36 in the same period last year. ⑹ Drownings primarily occurred in southern and coastal areas of mainland France, often in unregulated waters. ⑺ Drownings and deaths affected all age groups, with the highest incidence among those aged 18 and over. ⑻ This data not only reflects the impact of extreme weather but also highlights inadequate public safety regulations.
