[The Trump administration ordered the EPA to stop tracking emissions from the largest polluters] The EPA plans to end standards that force power plants, industrial facilities, refineries and other major polluters to collect and report their emissions data. The agency's long-standing greenhouse gas reporting program tracks pollution at approximately 8,000 locations. Terminating this program will make it more difficult for the public and policymakers to track greenhouse gas emissions from various sectors of the economy. The polluters on the list reported approximately 2.6 billion tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2023. The move to terminate the program was announced on Friday but still needs to be finalized. At the same time, the agency is working to cancel dozens of environmental regulations from the Biden era. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin said in a statement that "the greenhouse gas reporting program is nothing more than bureaucratic red tape that does nothing to improve air quality." The agency said that terminating the program will save companies up to $2.4 billion in regulatory costs.
