Lutnick said in an interview that Musk applied his operating methods at Twitter (later renamed X) to the federal government, drastically cutting jobs but failing to achieve any substantial savings. "I think Elon was too focused on other people's goals," Lutnick said. "The focus should have been on reducing waste, fraud, and abuse, and personnel work could be done over time... I think he got the order wrong." Lutnick added that the size of the government could probably be reduced by 10% to 15%, but he believed such changes should be achieved through cabinet members carefully evaluating their respective departments, rather than through large-scale layoffs.
