France's new Prime Minister Jean-Yves Le Cornu said on Saturday he would abandon his predecessor's proposal to cut two public holidays, which was originally part of the budget measures aimed at reducing the deficit. On Friday, credit rating agency Fitch downgraded France's sovereign credit rating to A+, the lowest level in the country's history. In response to this news, Le Cornu told local newspapers Le Provence and Le Ouest-France that "we are paying the price for instability." After taking office on September 10, Le Cornu had promised to find "innovative ways" to work with opposition parties to pass a debt-cutting budget, while also promising to introduce new policy directions. In his first interview since taking office, he said, "My idea is simple: I want neither instability nor stagnation," adding that "future budgets may not fully reflect my ideas... In fact, this is almost certain!"
