Lula Emphasizes in New York Times Opinion: Brazil's Democracy and Sovereignty Are Non-Negotiable. Brazilian President Lula published an op-ed in the New York Times on the 14th, stating that Brazil is willing to negotiate with the United States on any mutually beneficial issue, but Brazil's democracy and sovereignty are not on the table. Lula first criticized the Trump administration's imposition of a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods. He said the US's promotion of job reshoring and reindustrialization is understandable, but unilateral action against other countries is "prescribing the wrong medicine." Imposing tariffs on Brazil is "misguided" and "illogical." He noted that the US has enjoyed a cumulative $410 billion trade surplus with Brazil over the past 15 years, with nearly 75% of US products entering Brazil tariff-free. Lula believes the US move has no economic justification and is politically motivated. He cited senior US officials as saying the US government is using tariffs and the Magnitsky Act to seek exemptions for former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. On the 11th, the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court announced that Bolsonaro was guilty of planning a coup and was sentenced to 27 years and 3 months in prison.
