Japan is accelerating the development of its own AI ecosystem to mitigate the risks of increasing dependence on foreign countries. According to a report by Jiji Press on the 12th, the Japanese government held its first meeting of the AI Strategy Headquarters at the Prime Minister's Office that day, clarifying guidelines for supporting domestic AI development. Japanese media reported that Japan relies on the United States for generative AI, and this move aims to address security risks by promoting domestic development. A draft "AI Basic Plan" was submitted at the meeting, stating that, given Japan's lagging development compared to the United States and China, it plans to "apply AI across society and initiate a development cycle," aiming to "turn the tide" for Japan. According to the Yomiuri Shimbun, Japan lags in AI adoption, with individual usage rates at only around 20% and corporate usage at 50% last year, both relatively low. The draft states that "the development of a national AI strategy is more important than ever" and outlines four basic guidelines: accelerating adoption, strategically strengthening development capabilities, governance leadership, and the continuous transition to an AI society. The goal is to make Japan "a country in the world where AI development and application are easily accessible."
