[John Lee: Hong Kong launches a combination of measures to encourage childbirth] Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee delivered a new policy address in the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region today (17th). John Lee said that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government will further launch a combination of measures to encourage childbirth, including: (1) Extending the period for newborn children to enjoy additional tax exemptions from one year to two years. From the 2026/2027 tax year, taxpayers can enjoy double tax exemptions (i.e. HK$260,000) for each child in the first two years after the birth of the child. The measure applies to all children under the age of two at the end of the tax year. (2) Further strengthening daytime care for infants and young children. In the next three years, 15 new subsidized child care centers will be added, providing a total of about 1,500 daytime care service places for children aged 0 to 3 years old, nearly doubling the current scale. The Social Welfare Department will also appropriately allocate more service places to care for infants and young children aged 0 to 2 years old. (3) In terms of after-school care services, the "After-school Care Service Program" will be expanded this academic year. There will no longer be a cap on the number of places, making it more convenient for parents who work away from home to take care of their children.
