South Africa's Inflation Rate Unexpectedly Slowed in August: (1) South Africa's annualized inflation rate fell to 3.3% in August, down from a ten-month high of 3.5% in July and below market expectations of 3.6%. (2) The easing of overall inflation was primarily due to a slowdown in food price growth (5.2%, compared to 5.7% in the previous month) and lower fuel costs (-5.7%, compared to -5.5% in the previous month). (3) Core inflation (excluding food, non-alcoholic beverages, fuel, and energy) rose to 3.1% in August, up from 3% in the previous month and reaching its highest level since March this year. (4) Month-on-month data showed that the CPI fell slightly by 0.1% in August, compared to a 0.9% increase in the previous month.
