Russia Responds to EU Energy Supply Cutoff: Sanctions Are Ineffective, Will Not Affect Position] 1. Regarding the EU's plan to accelerate the phase-out of Russian energy, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated on Wednesday that the move will not affect Russia or force it to change its existing position. He believes European countries mistakenly believe that continued sanctions can influence the Russian Federation's position. 2. Peskov further stated that Russia, committed to defending its national interests, has remained unaffected by these sanctions, a fact amply demonstrated over the past three years. Despite Western sanctions imposed on Russia over the Ukrainian conflict, the Russian economy has demonstrated resilience, despite challenges such as persistent high inflation and a rising budget deficit, partly due to a significant increase in military spending. 3. Despite sanctions, the EU still imports billions of euros in energy and goods, including liquefied natural gas and enriched uranium, but its imports of Russian oil and gas have declined significantly. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen previously stated, following a phone call with the US President, that the European Commission would propose an accelerated phase-out of Russian fossil fuel imports.
