[South Korean shipbuilding giants are planning to enter the US, with a 100 billion investment knocking on the door of the warship market] ⑴ Executives of South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries Group confirmed that they are in talks with several companies to acquire US shipyards, with the goal of achieving annual sales of US$2.2 billion to US Navy warships by 2035. ⑵ The company pointed out that the domestic shipbuilding capacity in the United States is insufficient and will prompt the market to open up to allies. Currently, the US shipbuilding industry accounts for only 0.04% of the global market share. ⑶ As a strategic layout, Hyundai Heavy Industries recently merged its affiliated company HD Hyundai Mipo to strengthen its warship business capabilities. ⑷ The main challenges facing the company include the shortage of skilled workers in the United States (the turnover rate remains high) and visa policy restrictions. It is estimated that it will take 3-5 years to train local workers. ⑸ Although laws such as the Jones Act restrict foreign companies from building warships, the US Congress is considering revising relevant bills to attract foreign investment.
