[India's brain-eating worm has caused 26 deaths] According to Indian media reports on the 18th, the number of cases of "brain-eating worm" infection in Kerala, southern India has surged recently. A total of 129 cases have been confirmed this year, resulting in 26 deaths. The local health department said that prevention and control measures such as disinfection of public water and suspicious water sources have been taken. "Brain-eating worm" is the common name for a parasite called Naegleria fowleri, which can cause a rare disease: primary amoebic meningoencephalitis. "Brain-eating worm" often lives in warm fresh water such as ponds, lakes, rivers, and hot springs. It can enter the human body through the mouth and nose, mainly invading the central nervous system, causing brain damage and triggering severe inflammatory reactions. The early symptoms of this disease are similar to those of a cold and are easily misdiagnosed, but the disease progresses rapidly, has a high mortality rate, and a survival rate of only about 3%.
